Dabo Swinney to speak at Shrine Bowl Banquet

Connie Altman, Game Chairman of the 76th Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas announced today that Clemson University Head Football Coach, Dabo Swinney  has accepted the invitation to be the special guest speaker for the Shrine Bowl Coaches and Players Awards Banquet on Friday evening,  December 14, 2012 at 6PM, in the Marriott Renaissance Park Hotel and Conference Center in downtown Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Ronnie Blount, Chairman of the Shrine Bowl Board of Governors said, “We are most delighted to have the 2011 ACC Champions Head Coach Dabo Swinney  to speak to our coaches, players, parents and fans of the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. As one of America’s premier collegiate coaches, his personal commitment to discipline and the importance he places on the standards of excellence on and off the field is extraordinary”.

At 42, Dabo Swinney is the youngest head coach in the ACC and one of the youngest in the country. However, his résumé is already stuffed with many significant accomplishments on a school, ACC, and national level.

In four years (three full seasons) as the Tigers’ head coach, Swinney has directed Clemson to a 29-19 overall record (.604) and a 19-10 record (.655) in ACC regular-season games. He has also led the Tigers to the ACC Championship game twice, won one ACC title, and has been named national coach-of-the-year.

2012 Shrine Bowl Coaches

2012 NORTH CAROLINA COACHES

NC Head Coach Nelson Smith                Garner High School, Garner

 

Coach Smith graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in Physical Education in 1980.  He began his coaching career at St. Paul’s High School, St. Paul’s, NC.  After two years at St. Paul’s he transferred to Northern Nash High School, Rocky Mount, NC where he served as Offensive Coordinator for one year.  In 1983 he became the Offensive Coordinator and Head Wrestling coach at Garner High School.  During Coach Smith’s tenure as Offensive Coordinator, Garner advanced to the state playoffs for 15 straight years, winning the State 4A Championship in 1987 and finishing second to Richmond County High School in 1998.  In 1999 Coach Smith became the head coach at Garner where in 12 years his teams have won conference championships 10 times, have participated in the state playoffs all 12 seasons, with the 2011 team finishing second to Greensboro Page in the4A State Championship Game. Coach Smith’s overall record as a head coach is 130-29.

 

Quarterbacks and Receivers Coach – Mike Byus              East Lincoln High School, Denver

Coach Byus graduated from West Virginia Tech with a degree in Physical Education in 1984. He began his coaching career at Scott High School, Madison, WV. He moved to North Carolinain 1987 and had the pleasure of coaching with Johnny Sasser at East Wake High Schoolwho was an East/West and Shrine Bowl coach himself. He moved to EnloeHigh School, Raleigh, NC in 1989 with Coach Ron Massey, also an East West and Shrine Bowl coach, as Head Track and Assistant Football Coach.  His first head football coaching job came in 1991 at Athens Drive High School, Raleigh, NC where he also served as Head Track as well as Assistant Athletic Director. At Athens Drive he led the team to four playoff appearances, back when it was an accomplishment to make the playoffs, including the 1st in school history. Coach Byus moved to Robbinsville High School, Robbinsville, NC in 2000 as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. While in Robbinsville his teams improved each of his five years there for a total record of 34-23. Currently, Coach Byus is the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at East Lincoln High School, where he has been since 2005. While at East Lincoln his teams have made constant improvements starting in 2005 with the schools 1st home playoff victory. Going to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds in consecutive years while finishing the run off with a State Championship appearance in 2008.

 

Defensive Backs Coach – Dave Grant         Walter M Williams High School Burlington, N.C.

Coach Dave Grant graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Industrial Technology in 1986. He began his coaching career in 1987 when he returned to his alma mater Walter M. Williams High School under Head Coach Sam Story.  In 2002 he became the Defensive Coordinator after serving in many roles along the defensive side of the ball.  During his tenure,WilliamsHigh Schoolplayed in three state championship games and captured the Class AAA State Title in 1999.  He also served as Head Coach for the wrestling program for 20 years.

 

Line Backers Coach – Doug Illing               Davie County High School, Mocksville

Coach Illing graduated from Summerville High School, Summerville, SC and played for legendary Coach John McKissick.  He played football for Lees-McRaeCollegein 1982-83 where he earned was named a Junior College All-American as a place kicker.  He received a football scholarship to Wake Forest University where he graduated with a BA in Sociology.  He began his high school football coaching career at Mt.Tabor High School,Winston-Salem ,NC.  In 1989 he became an Assistant Football Coach at R.J.Reynolds High School,Winston-Salem,  He became the Defensive Coordinator and Head Baseball Coach in 1995.  In 1998, be became the Head Football Coach at Davie County High School where he has accomplished 118 wins – 62 losses; 11 winning seasons; 8 conference championships and 6 trips to the 4AA or 4A quarterfinals.  In 2010 his team finished as 4A runner-up after closing the regular season with a 5-6 record.

 

Defensive Line Coach – B. J. Laughter                   Hendersonville High School, Hendersonville

Coach B. J. Laughter received a BS in Education from Mars Hill College and a MA in School Administration from Gardner-Webb University.  He has been a coach at Hendersonville High School for twenty-one years and has been the head coach there for fifteen years.  He has an overall record of 125 -58.  In 2008 he was an Assistant Coach in the North Carolina East/West All Star Game.  He was the NC preps 1A Coach of the Year in 1998.  He won the NCHSAA Homer Thompson “8 Who Make a Difference” award in 1999 and 2006, and has been the Conference Coach of the Year five times and Area Coach of the Year three times.

Offensive Line Coach – Adrian Snow                                 West Forsythe, Clemons

Coach Adrian Snow is a 1997 graduate of Appalachian State University.  In 2011, Coach Snow completed his 10th season as a head football coach, having served in that capacity at Surry Central, Watauga and currently at West Forsyth High School.  Coach Snow has compiled an overall record of 72 wins and 49 losses.  Coach Snow’s coaching career began as an assistant at Surry Central High School, Dobson, NC.  Following a four year stint at Surry Central, he then accepted an assistant’s position at R.J.ReynoldsHigh SchoolinWinston-Salem,NC.  Following his time at Reynolds, he would once again return to Surry Central, accepting his first head coaching assignment in 1999.  Following two successful years as Surry Central’s head coach, he returned to Reynolds to become the Defensive Coordinator.  In 2002, he accepted a position at West Forsyth High School to become the Offensive Coordinator.  From West Forsyth, Coach Snow accepted his second head coaching position when he was selected in 2004 by Watauga High School, Boone, NC to revitalize the Pioneer’s football program.  Coach Snow’s four year stint in Boone was highlighted by consecutive appearances in the 2007 and 2008 Western Regional Championship games, as well as capturing the school’s first-ever Northwestern 4A Conference Football Championship.  For his efforts, Coach Snow was recognized as Northwest 4A Coach of the Year in 2006, as well as North Carolina AP Runner-up Coach of the Year in 2006.  Following an extremely successful four years at Watauga, in 2008 Coach Snow was selected to guide the Titan Football program of West Forsyth High School, where he currently serves as Head Coach.  During his four years at West, the Titans have compiled a 31 & 16 record.

 

Running Backs Coach – Russell Stone       Douglas Byrd High School, Fayetteville

Coach Russell Stone graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1978. He began his career as Head Football, Basketball, Baseball Coach and Athletic Director at Rowland High school(1978-1981).  His stay at his alma mater was highlighted by a final four appearance in the 1980 football season.  South Robeson High School,Rowland, NC was his next stop as the consolidated school opened in 1981.  He coached football and baseball there until 1988.  His Mustang football teams went to the playoffs 6 times and the 1986 baseball team won the 2A State Championship.  Coach Stone moved to Lumberton High, Lumbertonas Head Football Coach from 1988-1991.  His next stop was at West Forsyth, Clemmons, NC(1991-2005). His 14 year record was 110-52 with 7 conference championships and 2 top 20 rankings in USA Today.  Stone returned to Robeson County to coach the Purnell Swett Rams in 2005 and 2006. He is currently the Head Coach at Douglas Byrd High Schoolwhere his 5 year record is 51-16 with a 2008 4A state championship appearance.

 

2012 SOUTH CAROLINA COACHES

SC Head Coach and Line Backers Coach – Ray Stackley                   Stratford High School, Goose Creek

Head Coach Ray Stackley graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS degree in Physical Education and earned a Master’s degree in Secondary Education from the Citadel. He has been the Head Football Coach and Athletic Director atStratfordHigh School,Goose Creek,SCfor 27 years.  He holds an impressive record of 247 wins and 92 losses including a 10-year run when the Knights posted a 118-18 record, won an undefeated State AAAA title in 1999 and finished Runner-Up in the State Championship.  His teams have played in 7 Final Fours and have won 13 regional titles including a consecutive 8-year reign, going 55-0.  His teams have qualified for the state playoffs in 26 of 27 years.  In 2006,StratfordHigh Schoolnamed its stadium “Ray Stackley Field” and in 2008 he was inducted into the South Carolina Coaches Hall of Fame.  He served as an assistant coach in the 2000 Shrine Bowl and was Head Coach in the 2010 North/South All Star game.

 

Quarterbacks Coach Kirk Burnett                         Airport High School, West Columbia, SC

Coach Burnett graduated from Furman University with a degree in History in 1987. He began his coaching career at Irmo High School, Columbia, SC and then transferred to Spring Valley High School, Columbia, SC to become the Head Baseball Coach and Offensive Coordinator for 2 years. In 1995, he became the Head Football and Head Baseball Coach at Ridge View High School, Columbia, SC. At Ridge View his football teams made the semi-finals 3 consecutive years and played in the AAAA Division II finals in 1998. The Ridge View baseball teams also won 3 region titles during this time. In 2004, Coach Burnett returned to his Alma Mater at Airport High School, West Columbia, SC.  His teams have won 3 region titles and the school’s first undefeated regular season in 2009 and 8 straight playoff berths. The last 5 years Airport High School has averaged 10 win seasons.

 

Receivers Coach – Wade Cooper                 Blue Ridge High School, Greenville

Coach Wade Cooper graduated from the University of South Carolina (Spartanburg) with a degree in English in 1992 and with a Master’s Degree in History in 2003.  He began his coaching career at Boiling Springs High School, Boiling Springs, SC coaching the “C” team in 1987 and was promoted to the varsity in 1990.  In 1991, he became the Defensive Coordinator and remained there until 1998.  He also was the Head Track Coach during this time.  In 1998, he became the Defensive Coordinator at Spartanburg High School and was part of the Spartanburg High School 2001 State Championship Team.  In 2004, he became the Head Football Coach at West Oak High School, Westminster, SC.  After one year he returned to his alma mater, Boiling Springs High Schoolas the Head Football Coach.  He took over a program that had only won one game in two years.  In four years, Boiling Springs High Schoolwas 18-28 and had made the playoffs two of the four years.  When Boiling Springs High School won 7 games in 2005, it was only the second time in 40 years that that had happened.  In 2008, Coach Cooper became the Head Football Coach at Blue Ridge High School in Greenville, SC where he has been for the past four seasons where his overall record has been 22-20 including an 8-3 record this past season and a playoff appearance in two of the four years.

 

Secondary Coach – Don Frost                      Christ Church Episcopal High School, Greenville

Coach Don Frost graduated from Carson-Newman College with a degree in Physical Education and a minor in History.  In 1980, he began his coaching career at Mauldin High School, Mauldin, SCwhere he became the Head JV Football Coach, Head Baseball Coach and the Head Soccer Coach.  In 1984, he became the Head Football Coach and Assistant Baseball Coach at J.L. Mann High School,Greenville,SC.  In 1991, Coach Frost became the Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Baseball Coach at Riverside High School, Greer, SC.  In 1996 he relocated to Strom Thurmond High School, Johnston, SC as the Assistant Varsity Football Coach and Head Baseball Coach.  In 1998, he became the Defensive Coordinator.  He returned to Riverside High School in 2000 and in 2001 became the Head Football Coach and Athletic Director.  During his tenure at Riverside High School, the football team was Co-Regional Champions.  He became the Head Football Coach at Christ Church Episcopal, Greeneville, in 2008.  In the past four years his football teams have accumulated 44 wins and 6 losses, including 4 regional championships.  The Christ Church Episcopal football team won theSouth CarolinaState1-A Division II Championship.

 

Defensive Line Coach – Bill Harvey                                    Newberry High School, Newberry

Coach Harvey graduated from Clover High School, Clover, SC in 1971. In 1976 he graduated from Newberry College, Newberry, SC with a degree in history.  He began his coaching career at Clover Jr. High School, later moving to Newberry High School in the fall of 1977.  He became the Head Baseball Coach in 1981 and served in that position for 19 years. Coach Harvey has been the head coach of 9 conference championship teams, two upper-state championship teams, as well as head coach of a state championship team.  Coach Harvey has been an Assistant Football Coach at Newberry High School since 1977, serving under Head Coaches Mike Ware, Sam Baird, and Phil Strickland.  He was selected to coach in a North-South all-star baseball game in the 1990′s as well as the 2007 North-South football game.

 

Offensive line Coach – Tony Smith              Stratford High School, Goose Creek

Originally from Aiken, SC, Coach Tony Smith served eight years in the U. S. Air Force before he began his coaching career.  He earned a degree in Physical Education fromNewberryCollegeand a Master’s degree in Secondary Guidance from South Carolina State University.  He began his coaching career atNewberryCollegeand then served as the Offensive Line coach at Midland Valley High School, Aiken, SC.  While at Midland Valley High School he also served as the Head Track Coach and the Head Tennis Coach.  He moved to Stratford High School in Goose Creekin 1985 to coach the offensive line.  He also serves as the Head Wresting Coach, Head Junior Varsity Softball Coach and as an academic advisor.  In his roles as offensive line coach and assistant head coach, Coach Smith has helped lead the Knights to a record 247-97.  These wins include one state title, a state runner-up title, and eleven conference championships.  He also serves as the NCAA liaison for Berkeley County School District.  In 2009, he was selected to coach in the South Carolina North/South All Star Game.

 

Running Backs Coach – Mike Wells                        Buford High School, Lancaster

Coach Mike Wells graduated from Ware Shoals High School, Ware Shoals, SC in 1978.  He graduated from Erskine College in 1982 with a BS in Physical Education, where he also played baseball for four years.  He attended graduate school at Winthrop University for 2 years. Coach Wells began coaching at Buford High School, Lancaster, SCin 1984. He coached the defensive line for 5 years and became Defensive Coordinator in 1989.  He became the Head Coach in 2001, the Assistant Athletic Director in 2006 and was named the Athletic Director in 2011.  His teams have reached the playoffs in 9 of 11 years as head coach. He served as an Assistant Coach for the North in the 2008 North-South game.  He was also the Head JV Baseball Coach from 1990 until 1996 and the Head Baseball Coach at Buford from 1997 until 2002.  Coach Wells coached in the North-South All-Star Baseball game in 2002. He was also the Head boys’ Basketball Coach from 1985-1989.
