Nothing says tradition like the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. Established in 1937, the Shrine Bowl is the premier all-star game in showcasing the best players from both North Carolina and South Carolina. However, the game is always secondary in to the great efforts made by the Shriners across both states to raise money and awareness for the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The phrase “Strong legs run so weak legs may walk” has been a prominent part of the history of the Shrine Bowl.
The Shrine Bowl began in 1937 based on the model of the East-West Shrine Game in San Francisco. Former Charlotte Fire Chief Hendrix Palmer and the four Shrine Temples in the Carolinas staged the first game before 5,500 spectators. The game was played at Charlotte Memorial Stadium and admission was only one dollar. The Shriners raised $2,599.00 which was given to the Greenville Unit of the Shriners.
Since that first meeting, the Shriners have raised over 70 million dollars
